Worst computer program ever

Heh, maybe I should make a "worsts" series? Whatever, it'd pretty much just be to rant about my day. Which is what LJ is for.

Okay, so I actually have a job now! It's "occasional work", but this time of the year I'm in lots. There, they use a special program for doing time sheets, called Puma. It is the titular worst program ever. Not only does it suck harder than a black hole-powered vacuum, you can't get paid if you don't do your time sheet using it.

Anyone out there willing to bring me the programmer's head? Or their hands, eyes and tongue, I don't care if you leave them alive so long as they're in no state to ever program again.

Seriously, DON'T DO IT!

The song in question is "Belly of the Whale" by Newsboys, from the Jonah movie. It's a great song, and most of it is okay to sing. However, at the end you get into a bunch of really fast stuff I'd never known in the first place.

It's even harder when a) you've never sung karaoke before and just entered on a whim, b) you've never sung into a microphone before in your life and think your voice sounds really weird through it, and c) you've never actually seen the lyrics for the song. Sure, I knew it pretty well, but that was only from playing it on repeat who-knows-how-many times.

How do you say good-bye to the best job you're ever likely to have?

Two months ago, I considered myself a second-year university student. I wasn't doing too well, but I didn't particularly hurt at the time. I had semi-resigned myself to that I was likely to get kicked out at the end of the year; I had been on academic probation since the previous semester, and I wasn't doing any better. In fact, I was doing worse, because I'd completely stopped caring; when you care, you hurt. It took me a few drives with tears streaming down my face, but I'd gotten used to the idea of completely failing out.

Note that I still considered myself a student at the time. I hadn't really thought things through, besides idly paging through the 'Help Wanted' section.

About midway through exams (which I had completely given up on, not even studying, and leaving after an hour or so), I had my registrar's appointment, to set up courses for next year. I'm not really certain how I managed to get through that. I found courses that I would like to take, and heard that I could appeal academic probation. I might be allowed back the next year. Let me tell you, it's things like that that hurt more than you would imagine. You know how people say something felt like their heart was torn out? That felt like my heart was shoved though my sternum without anaesthetic, back into my chest.

I can't remember whether the worst part came before or after that appointment, but it's irrelevant. I met Prof Marigold (*not her real name) in the hallway. For those who don't know -- which I guess is everyone except me -- I had been employed by her for a while, doing things I would have done for free; working for her, although it payed very little, was the best job I'm ever likely to have in my entire life. We talked for a bit, and she mentioned that a) there was a gift bag for me in the front office, and b) she was looking forward to working with me next year.

Normally, I am a terrible actor. My real feelings are written on my face, making it hard to fake other ones. However, there is one thing I excel at faking. I can keep my voice level, pretend that everything's all right; the sunglasses I habitually wear mean nobody can see tears welling up in my eyes, and as long as they don't slip out from under the concealment of the lenses, you'll never know.

The gift was a box of chocolates, along with a stuffed dog. There was also an envelope inside; a card, it feels like. I haven't been able to open it. I can't bear to.

This was something I had never thought about. Not coming back, means not working with her.

Another day, another meeting in the hallways. This happened multiple times, so I don't really have to worry about chronological order. I was semi-kinda-maybe in the computer science program; I'd taken every computers course available (four at that level), and had considered myself a comp sci person for a while, until I began to have doubts. Despite that, I genuinely liked the professor for those courses, Prof Spruce (*not his real name). He's a nice guy, knows his stuff, and we get along well. Pretty much outside of the first course[s], I've been the only girl in those classes. He likes to call me his "top female student", to which I reply that I'm his ONLY female student in that. Enough backstory; so I was walking, and he greeted me, and asked me my plans, for both summer and autumn. I managed something noncommittal, but that reminded me of another thing.

Prof Spruce would be disappointed in me. Everyone who had been in my computers classes would know I was gone. It's a small university, smaller sciences department, even smaller computer sciences department.

Fast forward to summer. I've been pretty much living in the basement (where my room is), sleeping in till 1500, staying on the internet for the hours I am awake, and not really thinking about anything. I received a letter from my university. Good news: it contained a checque for my mailbox key deposit (money I really needed). Not so good news: my GPA was lower than Mariana's Trench, I had been on academic probation and showed no signs of grade improvement; I couldn't come back next year. I could appeal the decision if I wanted, but there was a deadline.

I metaphorically sat on it for a while, trying to avoid thinking about it, but by the next day, I knew I wouldn't appeal. I couldn't, being who I am. There were a number of reasons, and more rationalizations, but what clinched it was that I couldn't stand to have Prof Spruce look at me. A failure.

There are a number of emotions that are hard to bear in other people. But at least when they hate you, you can tell yourself that it's them in the wrong, and you might be right. When they're disappointed in you... no matter what, it's a dull cold pain that hurts more than any number of obscenities.

Finally, we get to what I originally started writing about. I decided that I'd have to tell Prof Marigold eventually, and I was already on the internet, so I should. Took me half an hour to write one sentence: "I won't be going back in the autumn."

I watched it today with some friends, and it was AWESOME. I'm pretty sure it's good even if you're unfamiliar with the comics, but it's better if you understand all the character cameos.

These are my thoughts on the movie, in no particular order. Warning: possible spoilers ahead; I say "possible" because I'm not really sure what counts as it.

Some movies, as soon as the credits start rolling, you can leave, unless you a) know someone who worked on the film and want to spot their name, or b) you're playing "Find-the-stupidest-name-in-the-credits". With this movie, you need to stay until the end. My favourite audience quote comes from this, from some guy at the front. (If you happen to be the "some guy", and you find this, please post it in the comments.) He said, "Looks like Deadpool is Live-pool." Or maybe "Looks like Deadpool is now Livepool"; I can't remember. It sounds better than it looks printed; you pronounce it as in "alive".

Here, Remy (aka Gambit) was introduced with brownish eyes, and they only turned red when using his powers -- which, by the way, were awesome.

I don't remember if how Professor X was crippled was ever really answered in the movieverse. In the Ultimate 'verse, it was a magnetically-propelled spear that severed his spine, finalizing the enmity between him and Magneto. In the main comics, it happened so many times, for so many different reasons, that it's practically a joke. I'm bringing it up here because when he shows up at the end of the movie (with a helicopter, no less), he can walk.

Also speaking about the movie, it contradicts the novelization of the first X-Men movie, specifically about Scott Summers.

I'm trying to think of every character from the comics that showed up, or at least made a cameo, other than the main character. Let's see: the Blob, who thought he was called that by mishearing "bub"; someone who might be Emma Frost (could turn to diamonds); a version of Deadpool (more on that later); Gambit; Professor X; and some unconscious guy whom I'm tempted to think might be Banshee, going solely by that he was male and had his mouth sewn shut(Banshee has a sonic scream). Now I'm wondering, would having his mouth closed prevent him from using his scream? Or could it come out his nose? And THAT mental image amuses me.

Deadpool. He's my favourite Marvel character. Sure, I like Daredevil (comics; the movie SUCKED) and Wolverine, but DP has a special place in the comics room of my heart. Most of that is because he's bat-nuts insane, and also funny. And badass. And he breaks the fourth wall ("My yellow text bubbles are back!"). So I was a little apprehensive of how he'd be treated in this. I mean, the Ultimate version might not have actually sucked in and of itself, but it sure wasn't nice if you're a Deadpool fan; same with their version of Alpha Flight. (Everyone, Marvel Comics hates Canada. What did we ever do to them...?)

Wade Wilson at the beginning was done all right, even a bit amusing; I liked when he was talking about swords, and how they're memorable. When however-his-name-is-spelled Stryker told Logan he had been killed, it brought me down a bit. Then I was like 'Ah well, at least they did him well for the time he was there.' Then later on I got to thinking, we were never actually shown his death. We got to see that lame guy with electronic powers get pwned by Victor, but not Wade. Therefore, according to movie logic, he is not dead, and I will continue thinking that until I get proof otherwise. Then, even later on, Stryker mentioned Weapon XI (he said 'eleven', but I'm thinking it was written in Roman numerals) as the pool of all those mutant powers, and referred to it as "Deadpool". I said up a little straighter; either that or I leaned forward more. Either way, I started paying even more attention. Sure enough, that guy was Wade Wilson; completely screwed up, unable to open his mouth (Logan: "So that's how you get him to shut up.), and computer-controlled. Oh, and did I mention that katanas grow out of his hands? That's what really got to me. I mean seriously, how did they even get those in his arms?

This is something that didn't bother me at the time, but did bother one of my friends: How could Logan even swim with all that adamantium in him? They actually had it make him increase weight, so to our non-physics-majors' minds, it seems unlikely. Come to think of it, one of my friends that was there actually IS a physics major, so we could have asked him a) if it would be possible and b) what equations would touch on that, but nobody thought of it; we were too busy enjoying the glow that comes with watching AWESOME movies.

It is incredibly odd watching something that puts WOLVERINE as the voice of reason. Seriously, WTF? I understand it, and it makes sense both out- and in-story, but it's still weird.

((This is specifically written for fanfic, but it can work with pretty much everything.))

The following things do not exist: limits to the amout of physical damage one can take and survive; limits to the amount of emotional damage one can take without a breakdown; continuity; cause and effect.

"Canon" is only there to be screwed with.

Inventing new phobias = no problem.

Inventing past traumas = fine.

Inventing new painful, debilitating and medically improbable diseases = cool.

There can never be too much blood.

If the laws of physics get in your way, forget about them.

Death is a revolving door for villains, a brick wall for allies.

What would be considered "crimes against humanity" if done to real people, are "interesting plot devices" in fanfiction.

The Golden Rule of Torturing Characters: "Do unto your characters as you would have others do unto your ex."

Webcomics (why not?)

So. There's a bunch of webcomics I know, so I thought why not share them with all the people on here.

If you have any webcomics you'd like to share with me, just post a comment here. I'll be certain to check them out.

Since my knowledge of them is bound to increase, I'll just update this entry when I can. Number up so far: 16.

Name and link: The Annals of Hearthstone
General info: Tektoonics is the name of the website; the name of the comics.... Well. It's set in the world of Hearthstone, hence the name. There are actually two different comics, set on different continents but with a great number of interconnections: the Range Patrol, and the Shrike Team.
What makes it different: First of all, there are no humans. But neither are there furries, although the races might be called that; they are based off of our animals, but aren't. Second of all, the author/artist is a professional apologist (look it up on Google if you don't know what it means), so not only is the world and religion in his comics well-thought-out, it has nothing against my beliefs.
Rating: PG for a knowledge of the darker side of life; but treating it tastefully and not revelling in it.
My opinion: One of the best webcomics I've had the fortune to read. There's something for everybody in it, and there's plenty to read.
Recommendation: If you're old enough to read this entry and understand the words at least, check it out. It's great.

Name and link: Questionable Content
General info: The name itself is fair warning. The story follows Marten, the hero (as in protagonist) only by a technicality, his AnthroPC (what it sounds like), and two other main characters who work at the Coffee of Doom.
What makes it different: It's set in a not-quite-future world, with robots, but not too much of a difference in setting. The main difference would have to be, not the plotline, but how it's done out.
Rating: R, or an extremely edgy PG-13, for language and talk of sexuality.
My opinion: It can be extremely funny at times, and the thing I love most about it is one of the characters who has severe OCD; she counts things for a living. However, it's VERY inappropriate for younger audiences.
Recommendation: You have been warned. Read the first page; if you find that objectionable, you won't like the rest of it. If you don't mind it, read the second page; if you find it funny, you will like the rest of it.

Name and link: WoT now?
General info: A Wheel of Time fancomic. VERY ridiculous if you know the series, absolutely useless if you don't.
What makes it different: One doesn't see very many WoT (Wheel of Time) fancomics; if you know any others, please tell me! It's made with sprites edited to look like the characters.
Rating: I'd say, PG for sticking-things-up-characters'-butts humour, but nothing explicit. A few pages, where the characters get stuck in South Park format (don't ask) would be rated R for language.
My opinion: Silly. Funny. Crack. If you know the series. If you don't, read the series as it's great, then read the webcomic.
Recommendation: You don't know the series, you won't get it. Much. If you do, you'll laugh your head off.

Series I want to know more about: aka, if you can provide me with scanslations, I'll love you forever. Again, alphabetical order.
Canterella; Eiji Psychometer; Elfen Lied; Hunter X Hunter (HXH); Pet Shop of Horrors; Shigurui; W Juliet

I've read volumes 6 and 7 of Canterella (or whatever it's called....) in French; I own one volume of Eiji Psychometer, same language, and have read two others; and I've read the first volumes each of Shigurui and W Juliet, again in French. I've read the first 17 chapters of Elfen Lied online, except now that freaking site is down. *growl* Read first two volumes of HXH, and have the same problem.

Shigurui.... If you google search it, you'll find out very quickly 1) that the manga covers are extremely bloodly, 2) that it's been licensed in French, and 3) that it's extremely violent. One person who wrote about it even said that it might make some people throw up. I wouldn't go so far as to say that.... but let's just say that in the first ten pages, one man pulls his intestines out and hands them to another guy. From my frog and pig dissections, I'd say that the series is anatomically correct. I've seen someone say that the combat is accurate as well.

I was going to buy this, if just to see if I could gross out this boy in my school. However, it was 16$, and my budget would't allow it if I wanted anything else. My recommendation on this series: If you can read French, don't mind violence and [a lot of] gore, and can find somewhere to read it where you don't have to buy it, do so.

I both love and hate cleaning out at the end of things.

This random train of thought is because I planned that sentence out much earlier on today, when I was cleaning up my room. Today`s Wednesday; I leave Rivière-du-Loup on Friday. My room isn`t cleaned OUT yet -- I need a bunch of stuff yet -- but I get the same feeling. It`s just like cleaning out my binders at the end of a school year; it`s so enjoyable to neaten it up and empty it out and organise the remainder, but, it`s done. Finished. History. And I`m running out of words.

I really shouldn`t be on Livejournal; I have my oral exam tomorrow, and I have to do a presentation on Vietnam, in French. *ack* It`s not so much the French that`s bothering me, it`s that I have to do a PRESENTATION, on something I should have RESEARCHED, and I`ve been procrastinating it ever since it was assigned and my eyes and wrist are starting to get sore so I don`t want to stay on.... Yeah.

This ferret mood set is so cute; I`m gonna try and make a mood set when I get home. Another thing I`m gonna do is make a heckload of icons, download all my pictures off of Photobucket and onto my computer, listen to a bunch of AMVs, and scream at my parents until my throat gets sore. You see, Mom`s e-mailed me saying that there`s been a bunch of changes made in the month I`ve been away. And you`ve never known freaking out until you`ve seen me flip.

Speaking of Photobucket, maybe I`ll post the icons I`ve made here. Feel free to take them, just credit me or I`ll hunt you down and have ten yappy terriers at your door. :-)

My freaky stalker-boy/girl

Okay, I have a freaky stalkergirl. She`s this blonde girl with brown eyes here (on French immersion), and she`s always, I mean ALWAYS, like saying «Hello (my name)» or «Goodbye (my name)» when she`s leaving or arriving, keeps saying she loves me, that I have beautiful hair, and one time when I accidentally asked her to put sunscreen on my back, she said there was nothing she`d like to do better in the world. And not in a sarcastic tone of voice either. I asked her if she was lesbian, and she said no; but she also said she`d want to be.

She scares me.

I also have this freaky stalkerboy. At least, I did yesterday; I hope he isn`t today. I hope. *crosses fingers* I swatted him with my mocassins a couple of times, and threatened to kick his butt, but his response to the latter just SCARED me. If he comes in here, and talks to me, I`m going to either kill him or leave this room. Probably the former.

And if he keeps this up, since he`s male and I`m female, I can sue him for sexual harassment. :-)

I`ve also decided to write ten random facts about myself.
1. In the summer, if possible, I always sleep with the blinds closed and the windows open.
2. The brightest thing I`ve worn in the past year was a flowered skirt someone loaned me, because except for my shirt, all my clothes were wet from going swimming in them. I rather would not have worn that skirt, but it was better than nothing.
3. I go OOOO!! for pancakes, waffles, or bacon. It sounds really stupid.
4. Sometimes I dream about internet sites.
5. Instead of chewing on my nails, I chew on my knuckles, or fingertips.
6. I always lock doors when I`m inside, but I rarely lock doors behind me when I`m going out.
7. Reading, internet, and listening to music are my drugs.
8. I`m as addicted to chocolate and fresh fruit as I am to the above.
9. There`s barely a blank side-of-the-page in my binder that isn`t covered with my scribbles.
10. I consider summer school a profitable way to spend vacation.

First Saiyuki fanfic

Okay, something random I was thinking about... and here you have it.

Rating: PG
Manga: Saiyuki, duh
Warnings: utterly stupid; anti-yaoi (can't stand it *shudders*); undescribed violence; completely censored obsenity. To understand it you'll have to not only know Saiyuki, but have a bit of an idea of its usual fanfic.

And it begins....

It was NOT a dark and stormy night, because if it were, Genjo Sanzo the 31st of China would not have been anywhere near the empty isolated field invented solely for plot purposes. It was daytime; Hakkai was working on preparing the next meal, the saru was probably bugging him, and the kappa -- he didn't want to think about what the kappa was doing.

Suddenly, a herd of youkai that had been captured the previous night by some ~~enterprising fan~~ sadistic person and fed aphrodisiacs appeared out of nowhere. "GENJYO SANZO!!" they screamed with one voice.

Sanzo looked upon them with unveiled contempt, boredom visible in his purple eyes. "So, hand over the Maten Sutra again, is it?" he said in the flat tones of one who was experiencing the same old, same old. The youkai were even more unorganized than usual; this was pathetic.

"No," one said. "We want to **** your **** and ********--" And here the author got tired of writing all the asteriks. The youkai used increasingly pornographic terms to describe the common fantasy, involving one blond monk and a bunch of other things.

All the hidden yaoi fangirls (the non-yaoi fangirls were busy scouting the nearby town looking for good females to pair the ikkou up) were listening with rapt attention, pens frantically scribbling on notepads to remember all that was said. Gojyo, some distance away, ended up hearing the youkai because of the volume: it was too much even for him. He ran away, hands over his ears, head spinning.

The monk, however, was slightly confused as to the sudden change of youkai behaviour, slightly relieved at being granted a respite from the constant attacks; but most of all, utterly bored at having to stand still and listen to all of it, owing to The Unwritten But Still Etched In Stone Laws Of Anime. Deciding to make some profitable use of time, he pulled his cell-phone out from his robe.

"No, I'm not interested in archery. No, I DON'T need to hear about the new Gun Registry Laws. Yes, I want a machine gun. No, I don't need to buy in bulk; one should be sufficient. No, IT DOES NOT NEED COLOUR DECOS! Yes, airlift delivery would be nice."

The lot of them stayed in the same position for days; the youkai taking turns shouting out NC-17 rated things, Sanzo going through enough cigarettes to fill up the entire stratosphere of Saturn, the yaoi fangirls -- having run out of space on their notepads -- writing on their arms. Finally a helicopter appeared overhead. Nobody noticed but Sanzo. "Finally," he exhaled.

A box was dropped down; he opened it, and extracted a gleaming-new machine gun, with ammo. When the youkai who was currently speaking paused for breath, Sanzo aimed the machine gun.

-Break because the author doesn't know how machine guns work.-

After the split-second break, and it was no longer than that, all the youkai in sight were dead. The yaoi fangirls collapsed, as one, as if they were dead; all their fandom hopes having gone up in smoke. Sanzo simply scanned his surroundings, stepped on his cigarette, and walked back to the inn.

On language

My, I'm a regular journaling machine today, ain't I? But this time, it actually has a PURPOSE beyond giving a funny link.

Just a couple of things I was thinking of.

First, I should mention that the library computers have absolutely no sound - not even when you use headphones - and that I can't read Japanese.

So I was at the library, looking at this 7-minute trailer for X-3. Looked kinda interesting, I'll probably rent the movie once it comes out on DVD. However, I had no idea what they were saying; as I mentioned, there was no sound, and asides that, I can't lipread. So I was watching very closely, closer than I ever do normally unless I'm looking for a good screenshot or something. I had to pay attention to facial expressions, how long someone was talking for, every single detail, and what I know of the characters from watching the previous two movies and reading up on how they were in the comics a year or two ago. Let me tell you, it was challenging. I'm on my home computer now, and just starting to load that video - did I forget to say that my home computer, the Internet's slow? Well it is. I wonder how much of my guesses was right. (And just in case anyone cares, here's the link to it.)

Something else: I'd found a link to scans of Saiyuki Reload manga, just came out recently. However, they weren't translated. I know maybe 20 words in transliterated Japanese, but this wasn't transliterated; and even if it was, it would have been no help. Again, context; but I felt it much more acutely than I did with watching that trailer. I kept saying to myself "I wish I could read"; I felt such a desperate urge to understand what was being said, that went beyond simply knowing the plot.

Whaddaya know, more random musings. Speech patterns and quirks. Verbally, I tend to add 'like' a lot, ditto with 'bloody'. And that sentence gives another one. When writing, I often use 'ditto with' or something to avoid writing something again. Don't know why, since sometimes it takes longer to type. Maybe it's stylistic; but it doesn't always sound that great. Guess it doesn't matter.

I get drunk on fanfic....

Not like me to post fanfic links.... But I'm telling you, I couldn't breath, I was laughing my butt off, and I was in the library. I got up, tried to go into the hallway for a drink; I couldn't walk straight. I was hitting into walls, laughing all the while, got some strange looks. I couldn't swallow the water when I finally got to the fountain. I hit my butt hitting the wall when I half-slid half-fell down.

This is so bloody stupid. And I know it's bloody stupid. Such is the story of my life.

It's happening again; and I just go along with it. Despite all my screaming and bluster, when it comes down to it I just slightly nod, flash some teeth and keep a mask on.

I've screwed myself up SO badly. And I can't tell about it to anyone, because the people who'd give a darn are too involved; they'd want to fix my life for me. Burn it, it's their bloody attempts that cause this all. No, it's not their fault. It's mine.

Yes, I DID have a problem with it. Then why didn't I say so?! I'm scared. Scared to talk. Scared to have something to say. I can't change it now; it was announced. If I'm so bloody not-caring-what-other-people-think, then why can't I say that I don't think it'll work?! And why can't I say that I can't stand it?!
